Student Persona Development: The Power of Reddit

A well-developed persona gives institutions a clearer picture of who they’re trying to reach, what those students care about, and what may influence their enrollment decisions.

While traditional persona development relies heavily on quantitative research, there’s another source of insight that can help fill in the gaps: Reddit.

‍

What Is a Student Persona?

A student persona is a research-based representation of prospective-student groups or the ideal target student. Student persona development takes into account interests, goals, characteristics, financial situations, and more to help define the trajectory of the student journey and relevant pain points along the way.

For higher education marketers, personas can help transform a broad audience into something more specific and actionable. Instead of marketing to prospective students as a whole, an institution can consider the distinct needs and motivations of different student groups.

Why Reddit Matters in Higher Ed Marketing

Reddit's sheer volume of traffic makes it a platform worth paying attention to. It functions somewhere between a search engine and an online forum, allowing users to look up information, ask questions, participate in communities, and share personal experiences.

Semrush Web Traffic Statistics found Reddit to be the third most used website in the country. Additionally, a 2025 survey found that 48% of US adult Reddit users are between the ages of 18-29, placing them in the exact age demographic for undergraduate, transfer, and graduate prospective students.

The platform is built around conversation. Students can ask questions they might not feel comfortable asking an institution directly, compare their experiences with those of other students, and seek advice from those who’ve already gone through the same process. This makes Reddit particularly interesting for colleges trying to understand the student perspective.

‍

Reddit's Role in the College Search

Reddit isn't simply a place where students spend time online; it can play a direct role in how they research colleges. A 2025 study of more than 1,500 enrolled students found Reddit to be the preferred online forum during the college search process, with 67% of students using the platform.

The platform creates an anonymous environment for prospective students to ask genuine questions, share their thoughts or concerns, voice personal experiences, and provide or seek advice from other students. Its unfiltered nature yields endless insights into what prospective or target students are thinking, feeling, concerned over, and interested in.

Using Reddit to Shape Student Personas: An Unfiltered Perspective

College websites hold an important role in enrollment marketing, but at times can feel formal and slightly impersonal. Here, information is naturally presented from the institution's perspective, with an emphasis on programs, opportunities, outcomes, and institutional strengths.

Prospective students are often asking a different question: What will my life actually look like if I go here? They want to know how much tuition really costs, what housing is like, whether students enjoy campus life, how easy it is to make friends, and what kind of support they can expect when needed. These questions aren’t always answered directly through traditional marketing materials.

If students repeatedly ask about affordability, for example, it may signal that cost is an important concern within a particular audience. If students consistently ask about campus culture, the underlying motivation may be a desire to find community and belonging. The individual questions being asked are useful, but the patterns behind them can be even more valuable.

While Reddit isn't a source of objective truth, it is a source of student perspective and perception. The information they post, the questions they ask, and the answers they provide are key to refining accurate, detailed student personas.

Mixing Quantitative and Qualitative Research

Instead of simply showing who prospective students are, Reddit can help reveal how they talk about their experiences. Candid conversations expose questions, concerns, opinions, motivations, frustrations, and expectations shared amongst students that may not appear in enrollment data or demographic profiles.

Strong personas represent more than measurable characteristics. While Reddit shouldn’t replace traditional persona research, quantitative data may leave room for small narrative gaps between the numbers. Reddit can add context to stats for a more comprehensive picture of target student groups and the pain points affecting their enrollment journey. The challenge lies in ensuring personas reflect how prospective students actually think, not just what the numbers say about them.

What to Look For on Reddit

Not all information on Reddit is made equally. It’s important to know what to track when gathering insights on prospective students.

Identify Questions Students Are Asking

Look for recurring questions across relevant subreddits. What information are students repeatedly searching for? What do they have difficulty finding on college websites? What questions come up before, during, or after the application process? This can reveal informational gaps in existing personas, websites content, and marketing materials.

Identify Common Pain Points

Pay attention to the issues students repeatedly worry about or struggle with. Cost, financial aid, housing, admissions requirements, academic workload, campus culture, practical experience, career outcomes, and student support are a few topics that can influence enrollment decisions. Repeated concerns can help schools identify potential barriers preventing prospective students from moving forward in their enrollment journey.

Understand the Motivations Behind Enrollment Decisions

It’s important to look beyond what students say they want and consider why they want it. A student asking about campus clubs may really be concerned about finding community. A student asking about career outcomes may be focused on ROI. These underlying motivations make student personas more strategically useful because they connect behaviors and interests to the needs driving them.

Observe the Language Students Use

Reddit affords marketers a direct look into the language students use when discussing their concerns or worries. Identify repeated phrases, the wording of questions, descriptions of problems, emotional language, and informal terminology. This can help inform more authentic enrollment messaging, website copy, email campaigns, and content topics.

Relying on Both Students and Data

Strong student personas should reflect both the measurable characteristics of prospective students and the motivations, concerns, and questions behind their decisions.

Quantitative research provides the foundation. Reddit can then provide institutions with access to candid conversations to help fill the narrative gaps left by traditional data.

The better institutions understand what students are asking, what they care about, and what might be holding them back, the better equipped they are to create marketing that actually answers those questions.
